Neighborhood

The cozy, intimate and affluent enclave of Sutton Place has many longtime residents and has, in recent years, attracted many younger families. The neighborhood comprises only a few blocks beginning at the corner of East 59th Street and running to East 53rd Street.

On the neighborhood’s eastern side, the cross streets end in cul-de-sacs, most with parks. At its northern end, there is Sutton Place Park, the newly enlarged park that stretches from 56th to 57th along the river.

This new beautiful river front park is connected by a promenade of nearly a quarter of an acre of newly renovated public land. Sitting on one of the benches facing the East River is breathtaking. The expansive view includes the 59th Street Bridge. There is a large patch of grass where people can sit and benches are set up throughout. At the southern end of the neighborhood sits another park also outfitted with benches and lush gardens. To the north at 60th Street, there is full access to the East River Promenade complete with walking and cycling paths.

The neighborhood is in School District 2, home to several well-regarded schools including Public School 59, Montessori School of New York International, Cathedral High School and High School of Art and Design. Scattered throughout the nearby area are playgrounds, recreational facilities and even a State Park. There is the Twenty-Four Sycamores Park located at 501 East 60th Street, which features separate areas for toddlers and for older children. And a short tram ride away is the beautiful Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms State Park, located on Roosevelt Island.

Moreover, the neighborhood is served by a number of clubs and offers a broad array of recreational opportunities. The Sutton East Tennis Club offers tennis courts all year round along with instruction for children and adults of all ages. Home to local as well as international tennis enthusiasts, Town Tennis Club is a members-only tennis and social club, which offers exceptional tennis and dining experiences. Around the corner is the outstanding River Club which is one of New York’s premier family clubs. Their clubhouse offers tennis courts, squash courts, golf simulators, a pool, fitness center, dining facilities and more.

There is also the 54th Street Recreation Center with a large indoor pool, an indoor basketball court, volleyball court, cardio and dance rooms along with many other fitness offerings. And, of course, there are many other fitness centers located in the neighborhood. Additionally, the Sutton Place area is only a few blocks away from some of the most distinguished medical facilities in the world.
